The Department of Process Engineering hosted the Western Cape provincial round o the annual Minquiz science competition on Wednesday, 08 May 2013, on behalf of Mintek. A total of 43 schools entered their top 3 grade 12 learners to compete in this competition; of these, 22 schools participated in the gold category and 21 schools participated in the platinum category. The competition entailed a written quiz, which was completed individually, where after the top 5 teams in each category competed in an oral quiz.

The gold category was comfortably won by the team from Livingstone High School, while Settlers High School and Curro Langebaan battled it out in a tie-break to determine the second and third positions. Settlers High School achieved second position with Curro Langebaan claiming the third position. The platinum category was an intense and close competition, with Worcester Gymnasium taking top honours, followed closely by Bishops and Parel Vallei High School in second and third position, respectively.

The top two learners in each category will represent the Western Cape at the Minquiz national finals, which is scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on 10-11 July 2013. Ismail Rawoot (Bishops) was the only learner to receive a Certificate of Excellence for achieving a mark of 80% or higher in the written quiz; he will be joined by James Nevin (Westerford High School) to represent the Western Cape in the platinum category at the national finals. The team that will participate in the gold category consists of Musa Omar (Livingstone High School) and Bradleigh Marks (Settlers High School).
